Emberger Alm, Austria

The Emberger Alm is a wide alpine pasture and an alpine winter sports area north of Greifenburg in Upper Carinthia. It is located at 1800 m above sea level on the southern edge of the high alpine Kreuzeck group below the Naßfeldriegel north of the Drau Valley in the municipality of Berg im Drau Valley.
In addition to skiers, the Emberger Alm is particularly popular with kite and paraglider pilots. In 2004 the women's hang-gliding world championship took place here and in 2008 the European hang-gliding championship. The west-east orientation of the Drau Valley enables optimal thermal flight conditions. The large difference in altitude to the valley (1200 meters in altitude) and the well-organized take-off and landing sites bring thousands of pilots to the Upper Drau Valley every year.

Every autumn, telescope meetings of amateur astronomers take place here. The location is particularly suitable for astronomical observations because of the mostly clear autumn weather and the clear view from east to south to west. Due to the few settlements in the narrow Oberdrautal, there is no scattered light from the valleys.
